A lateral transfer is a process that enables students who have been admitted to a higher education program through the national university entrance examination to transfer to the same or a different program at their current university or another university, subject to the regulations and requirements established by the relevant institutions. 

Score Type 

If the score type of the student's current program differs from that of the program to which the student intends to transfer, the required score type for the target program must have been calculated in the year the student took the university entrance examination. For example, a student wishing to transfer from a program based on the TM1 score type to one requiring the MF4 score type must have had an MF4 score calculated in the year of the examination. 

Grade Point Average (GPA) 

A satisfactory Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the primary requirements for lateral transfer. The minimum GPA requirement is determined by each university and typically ranges between 3.00 and 3.50 on a 4.00 scale. As the number of available transfer places is limited, applicants with higher GPAs generally have a greater likelihood of being admitted. 

Eligibility Period 

Students may apply for a lateral transfer only after successfully completing their first academic year. The preparatory year, where applicable, is not considered part of the academic program for this purpose; therefore, students must complete at least one year in their department before becoming eligible to apply. 

Applications are not accepted during the first or final semester of associate degree programs (two-year programs), or during the first or final year of bachelor's degree programs (four-year programs). 

Application Period 

Lateral transfer applications are generally accepted during the summer break. Each university determines its own application schedule and publishes the relevant dates on its official website. 

Number of Applications 

A student may submit up to two lateral transfer applications. If the initial application is unsuccessful, the student may apply again in the following semester, provided that the university permits a second application. The acceptance of repeat applications is entirely at the discretion of the respective university. In practice, the second application is typically submitted at the end of the student's second academic year. 

Transfer Quotas 

The number of students admitted through lateral transfer is determined by each university and is generally proportional to the admission quota of the relevant program. In most cases, transfer quotas range from 5% to 10% of the program's regular student intake. For example, a department with an annual quota of 100 students may admit approximately five lateral transfer students. These quotas are announced by the universities before the application period. 

Special Circumstances 

Students who have suspended (frozen) their enrollment retain their eligibility to apply for a lateral transfer, provided they satisfy all other applicable requirements. However, students who have been subject to disciplinary sanctions may not be eligible to apply, depending on the regulations of the relevant university. 

Number of Students Enrolled at Our University Through Lateral Transfer in the 2020–2021 Academic Year: 

• A total of 148 students enrolled through Inter-Institutional Lateral Transfer: 88 students to the same program and 60 students to a different program via Supplementary Article-1. 

• 24 students enrolled at our University from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through lateral transfer to the same program. 

• 175 students enrolled at our University through Inter-Institutional Lateral Transfer to the same program. 

• 2 students enrolled at our University through Lateral Transfer from Abroad to the same program. 

• 11 students enrolled at our University through Intra-University Lateral Transfer to the same program.
